Burwood Beach ocean outfall is managed by Hunter Water which accommodates two wastewater treatment plants (Burwood Beach and Shortland) and serves the Newcastle City area and surrounding suburbs including Wallsend, Mayfield, Charlestown, and Dudley. Approximately 5091 ML per year water is recycled and reused as drinking water substitution, industrial process water, and irrigation. All treated effluent is discharged to the Pacific Ocean via 1.5 km ocean outfall diffusers.
