Mullaloo resident raises wastewater contamination concerns amid algae bloom at Perth beach

Mullaloo Beach was closed on Wednesday (18 January 2024) due to the presence of trichodesmium, a blue-green algae that could pose a public health risk.

Longtime Mullaloo Surf Club member Kim Allen said locals had for some time been concerned about contamination from the nearby Beenyup wastewater treatment plant. 

WA's Water Corporation has denied suggestions from residents an algal bloom that forced the closure of a popular northern suburbs beach in Perth was caused by treated wastewater being discharged into the ocean.
